Handbook formula

Fineness Modulus of Sand

FM uses sieves 4.75 mm down through 0.15 mm (No. 4–No. 100). Typical concrete sand FM is 2.3–3.1. Higher FM = coarser sand, needs less paste for the same slump but may finish poorly.

Cumulative % retained No.4 to No.100: 2, 15, 40, 70, 90, 97. FM?

Sieve stack: cumulative retained that defines FM.
  1. 1. Sum

    2+15+40+70+90+97=314.

  2. 2. FM

    314/100=3.14 (slightly coarse).

Answer: FM = 3.14
