Handbook formula

Retaining-Wall Sliding FS

Sliding: resisting shear at the base (W tanδ or cA + W tanδ) plus any passive in front, divided by horizontal active (and surcharge) thrust. Typical min FS ≈ 1.5. Also check overturning (FS ≈ 2) and bearing.

Step-by-step solved example

W=300 kN/m, δ=25°, Pa=80 kN/m, Pp=0. FS sliding?

Pabackfill
Sliding FS = resisting shear / Pa.
  1. 1. Resist

    W tanδ=300 tan25°=140 kN/m.

  2. 2. FS

    FS=140/80=1.75.

Answer: 1.75
