Handbook formula

Slope Factor of Safety

FS is resisting shear (or moment) divided by driving shear (or moment). For an infinite cohesionless dry slope, FS = tanφ / tanβ, independent of depth; failure impends when β → φ. Seepage parallel to the slope reduces FS to (γ'/γ_sat) tanφ / tanβ. Cohesion adds c/(γ z cosβ sinβ). Method of slices (Bishop, Ordinary) is used for circular arcs.

Step-by-step solved example

Infinite dry sand slope, c = 0, φ = 34°, β = 20°. Find FS.

Wβ
Infinite slope (c = 0, dry): FS = tanφ / tanβ.
  1. 1. Tangents

    tan 34° = 0.6745, tan 20° = 0.3640.

  2. 2. FS

    FS = 0.6745/0.3640 = 1.85.

Answer: 1.85
