Basic ASD Load Combination

Allowable-strength design compares service loads to allowable stresses. Handbook lists combinations such as D+L and D+0.75(L+W). Do not mix LRFD φ factors with ASD Ω on the same check.

Step-by-step solved example

Service D = 20 psf, L = 40 psf. Basic D+L for ASD deck check?

beamtributary width s
Service load on the same tributary strip as LRFD, without φ.
  1. 1. Sum

    w = 20+40 = 60 psf service.

  2. 2. Contrast LRFD

    LRFD would use 1.2D+1.6L = 88 psf on the same occupancy.

Answer: 60 psf service (D+L)
