Handbook formula

Couple Moment

A couple is two equal, opposite, non-collinear forces. Its moment is Fd and it is a free vector: you may slide it anywhere in the plane. A force may be moved to another point by adding a couple M=F d.

Step-by-step solved example

Replace a 5 kN force 2 m off a point O by a force at O plus a couple.

FFM=Fd
A couple is Fd, a free moment vector.
  1. 1. Force at O

    5 kN, same line parallel through O.

  2. 2. Couple

    M=5×2=10 kN·m (sense by right-hand / original rotation).

Answer: 5 kN at O plus 10 kN·m couple
